MSM

Methylsulfonyl methane (MSM) has been on natural-food-store shelves for years. It serves as an important source of bioavailable dietary sulfur, which plays a critical role in maintaining the integrity and elasticity of connective and other tissues. It's also an important component of proteins found throughout the body, like the ones in your hair, nails, skin, and tendons.

MSM has proven useful for many people in treating a huge array of conditions, including arthritis, allergies, fatigue, asthma, back pain, sinusitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, autoimmune diseases, and thinning hair - just to name a few. But even though MSM isn't new on the health scene, there is one thing that you need to know when taking any supplement, like MSM, that contains significant amounts of sulfur for several months or longer.

You must be sure to take a small amount of molybdenum along with it. Molybdenum (pronounced mo-leb'-nee-um) is a trace element that your body needs in order to metabolize the sulfur, transport oxygen, and detoxify. Since this element is used up as it helps metabolize sulfur (and there's much too little in our food supply to make up for it), your body is sure to need extra.

According to Dr. Jonathan V. Wright of Nutrition & Healing newsletter, you should take 50 to 150 micrograms of molybdenum daily to make up for any deficiencies. So, if you're using MSM to fix any of your health problems, be sure to supplement with molybdenum too. There are a few products available that combine the two together.
